Shin Ramen
Shin Ramen
  • Shin Ramen is a brand of instant noodle that has been produced by the South Korean food company Nongshim since 1986. Shin Ramen is the best-selling instant noodle brand in South Korea and is exported to over 100 countries.
  • Shin Ramen is named after the Chinese character “辛”, which means “spicy” and is also the surname of the founder of Nongshim, Shin Choon-ho. Shin Ramen is well known for its spicy flavor, which is inspired by Sogogijanguk, a cabbage and beef stew that is a popular traditional South Korean dish.
  • Shin Ramen has several varieties, such as Shin Ramen Black, which has an extra packet of beef stock soup for a more savory flavor; Shin Ramen Spicy Mushroom, which has a mushroom flavor; Shin Ramen Shrimp, which has a shrimp flavor; and Shin Ramen Red Super Spicy, which is even spicier than the original. Shin Ramen also has a vegan version, which does not contain any animal-derived ingredients.
  • Shin Ramen has different packaging formats, such as pillow packs, multipacks, flats, bowls, and cups. Shin Ramen also has a non-fried version called Shin Light, which has almost half a reduction on calories and fat.
  • Shin Ramen was introduced in October 1986 by Nongshim and quickly became a market leader in South Korea. Shin Ramen’s market share exceeded 50% for the first time in 1988 and has maintained its popularity ever since.
  • Shin Ramen is not only popular in South Korea, but also in many other countries around the world. Shin Ramen is especially popular in China, Japan, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Southeast Asia.
  • Shin Ramen is often customized by adding various toppings and ingredients to enhance its flavor and texture. Some common additions are cheese, eggs, kimchi, green onions, mushrooms, seaweed, tofu, spam, and ham.
  • Shin Ramen is considered to be a comfort food for many people who enjoy its spicy and satisfying taste. Shin Ramen is also associated with some cultural phenomena, such as K-pop, K-drama, mukbang (eating shows), and ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response).
  • Shin Ramen is not very healthy as it contains high amounts of sodium, carbs, fat, and artificial additives. A single serving of Shin Ramen contains 1,790mg of sodium, 80 grams of carbs, and ingredients such as hydrolyzed vegetable protein and monosodium glutamate (MSG).
  • Shin Ramen can be enjoyed in moderation as an occasional treat or snack. Some tips for making Shin Ramen healthier are using less seasoning powder or soup base, adding more vegetables or protein sources, using low-sodium broth or water instead of plain water, and reducing the portion size.
