  1. Hanks as an American actor and filmmaker, is the third most-represented actor behind Sidney Poitier and Gary Cooper, on the American Film Institute’s 100 Most Inspiring Movies of All Time, with four of his films making the list.
  2. He once shared the record as the actor to star in the most consecutive $100 million-grossing movies with seven and the Entertainment Weekly chose him as the only actor worthy of $20 million.
  3. Hanks is the only actor in history, apart from Spencer to earn back-to-back Best Actor Oscar, when he won for the first time in 1993, for Philadelphia and then in 1994 for Forrest Gump.
  4. He was born Thomas Jeffrey Hanks, on July 9, 1956, in Concord, California, as third of four children to itinerant cook, Amos Mefford Hanks and a hospital worker Janet Marylyn. His siblings are Sandra, Larry, and Jim.
  5. At the age of five in 1962, his parents got separated and he moved in with his father. Due to unpredictability of his home life, he had lived in 10 different houses, until the age of ten, before his father finally stabilized living arrangement when he married Frances Wong.
  6. He attended Bret Harte Junior High School at Oakland and later moved to Skyline High School. After high school graduation in 1974, he enrolled at Chabot Community College for next two years before enrolling at California State University, Sacramento.

  14. Hanks learned through ‘Ancestry.com,’ tracing back on his mother’s side, that he is the third cousin, four generations removed, of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States. Their common ancestors were John Hanks and his wife, Catherine, who were great-great-grandparents of Lincoln.

  23. On November 22, 2016, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award by then President Barrack Obama. He was also honored with ‘Hollywood Walk of Fame,’ at 7000 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California on June 1, 1992.
